Felix Mendelssohn Quarteto de cordas nº 2 em Lá menor, op.13
The result of a commission by the Council of Matosinhos from Young Composer in Residence at Casa da Música in 2007, Vasco Mendonça, the string quartet Caged Symphonies was premiered the following year in Matosinhos and honoured at the Clefworks Festival in the United States of America. Fernando Lopes-Graça’s Fourteen Notations were dedicated to the Porto String Quartet and are one of the most popular quartets in the repertoire of Portuguese music.
The first great string quartet written after the death of Beethoven was Mendelssohn’s Quartet in A minor, an excellent work within the genre and heir of the best Viennese tradition.
