Alessandro Scarlatti Salve Regina; Miserere; Magnificat
Sacred music is not the genre that we immediately associate with the two most famous members of the Scarlatti family. Alessandro became famous as an opera composer, extending his influence to the main Italian musical hubs: mainly Naples and Rome, but also Venice and Florence. However, sacred music accompanied the composer while he was Chapel Master in various churches. Dixie Dominus and the Magnificat are perfect examples of the expressive intensity and mastery of the counterpoint by this master of Baroque music. His son, Domenico, is known especially by his impressive and influential work for keyboard, being the author of more than 500 sonatas. Te Deum was composed and interpreted when the composer was in Lisbon at the service of the Patriarchal Chapel. The remaining works belong to different periods and contain examples of his predilection for the combination of stile antico and stile moderno, from the greatest polyphonic decorum of Miserere to the brilliant counterpoint of the motet Te Gloriosus.
