The ballet Mata Hari, arranged for string quartet, is one of the most important works by composer Eugénio Manuel Rodrigues, adding to the group of Portuguese writers recorded by the prestigious Arditti Quartet.
Entitled Scenes in the Mountains, with the subheading adagio which forms its second movement, the string quartet in G major by José Vianna da Motta was dedicated to Bernardo Moreira de Sá, founder of the Orpheon Portuense and the Porto Conservatory of Music. This programme, marked by Portuguese music, is crowned by one of the more playful scores by Shostakovich, one of the most important composers in the history of string quartets.
