The Jewish musical heritage is honoured in a concert that combines tradition and modernity. Written in 1732, Esther by Handel is considered the first English oratory. The version of the Jewish libreto dates back to 1759 and was probably performed a year before the death of the composer. The libretto by Jacob Saraval, Rabbi of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam, is based on the English version but adapts poetic material from the Bible, especially regarding Easter and the Psalms. The concert is also marked by the reflections of contemporary masters on the richness of the Sephardic musical tradition. Arie Bar Dorman and Shimon Cohen, composers who currently live in Israel, use famous traditional melodies in their compositions.
