The prestigious English conductor Ryan Wigglesworth conducts a programme in which the dominant theme is the night. It includes a reflective, subtle and almost transcendental work by Harrison Birtwistle, exploring a melancholic universe one wouldn’t normally associate with the composer. The programme also highlights the characteristic fantasy of Stravinsky’s country, with the famous devilish puppet that according to Petrushka’s author exasperates the patience of the orchestra. Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death is one of the song cycles for voice and piano that better represent Russian music. At Casa da Música the song cycle will be presented in an orchestrated version with the interpretation of mezzo-soprano Christine Rice, a frequent guest at the most prestigious opera houses in the world. From the same composer, Night on Bald Mountain is inspired in literary works and Russian tales describing pagan rituals in St. John’s Eve.
