The Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música was formed from a small group of instrumentalists from the Remix Orchestra, with the aim of playing baroque music from a historically informed perspective. Essentially composed of young musicians trained in the playing of early music, the orchestra has brought in replicas of period instruments, played with baroque bows and gut strings. In 2007, the orchestra worked with specialists in the classical and baroque repertoire, such as Harry Christopher and Fabio Biondi. Its musical director is the English conductor Laurence Cummings.
Working with leading international conductors is a priority of the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música , as well as playing with soloists who have already enjoyed a prominent international career and Portuguese musicians trained in the playing of early music.
The Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música will feature in some of the most significant moments of the 2008 season, playing the works of the most prominent baroque composers in the course of five highly varied programmes. It will play at the Nordic Focus event, which is the theme of the season of concerts, in a concert dedicated to Buxtehude, marking the institution's third anniversary with some of the favourite baroque works, and will end the season celebrating Christmas.
