Joseph Haydn As Estações
After the success of Creation, Haydn's collaboration with librettist Van Swieten continued and he wrote the great oratorio that ended up being one of his greatest masterpieces. Drawn apparently as a reflection on Nature, The Seasons begins with the sowing of the seeds in the spring, describes the dawn of a summer day and a sweeping storm, the autumn harvests and a rigorous winter that extinguishes everything. In effect, this is an allegory of life that builds on a wealth of melodic ideas based on the authenticity of traditional songs and choirs of shepherds and spinners, but also exploring the erudite language of Haydn that culminates in several fugues and suggests the real depth of the piece - the inexorable march of life, and hope in a new existence, "forever free from suffering and death".
